I became your enemy because I tell you the truth
“You can fool some of the people all the time and all the people some of the time,
but you can’t fool all the people all the time.” A. Lincoln

Going against the grain and their Western allies, Sweden has announced that they will be forgoing trying to meet their arbitrary climate and emission goals, and will instead build nuclear powerplants, shifting away from the initial “100% renewable” goal to now “100% fossil-free,” creating the pathway to go nuclear.

Because of the heavy-handed restrictions levied against Russia, Sweden, the newest member of NATO, began telling their citizens this past winter to “build huts out of blankets” in order to stay warm, because of the inflated energy prices and shortages. At one point one county began to turn off streetlights at night to conserve power.

Euractiv reports that this will give ‘the right-wing government the green light to push forward with plans to build new nuclear plants in a country that voted 40 years ago to phase out atomic power.’ The new plan will allow the government to meet a forecast doubling of electricity requests approximately 300 TwH by 2040 and reach net zero emissions by 2045.

This creates the conditions for nuclear power. We need more electricity production, we need clean electricity and we need a stable energy system.

Finance Minister Elisabeth Svantesson said in parliament.

‘Sweden’s parties agreed [to] a deal in 2016 that new reactors could be built at existing sites. However, without subsidies, it has been seen as too expensive. The new right-of-centre coalition says new reactors are essential to power the shift to a fossil-free economy and has promised generous loan guarantees,’ Euractiv added.

Roughly 98% of Sweden’s electricity production comes from hydro, wind, and some nuclear already in place.

Following the government’s announcement, Net Zero Watch, based in the United Kingdom, confirmed and applauded the move.

The group wrote in the blog update: ‘The Swedish decision is an important step in the right direction, implicitly acknowledging the low quality of unstable wind and solar, and is part of a general collapse of confidence in the renewable energy agenda pioneered in the Nordic countries and in Germany.’

“[…] The United Kingdom, and other substantial industrialized economies need to face the facts, and understand that only a gas to nuclear pathway is viable to remain industrialized and competitive,’ the group added.

Living close to Russia focuses the mind, and the Swedish people not only wish to join NATO but also to ground their economy in an energy source, nuclear, that is physically sound and secure, unlike renewables which are neither. For the time being the UK government continues to live in a fantasy of their own making, but we are coming to the end of the green dream.
